down to the roots of all the grasses

It didn’t have to cloud over as you walked out the door,
but now the puddles start to form and I’m reminded of before;
because it’s not over for the first time and it’s not gonna be the last,
no, it’s not over for the first time, may I remind you, we have a past.
And it’s not the last time you walk out and leave me here to cry
because it’s not the last time we say goodbye.
You didn’t have to make such a speech when you left,
I know your lines, I know the breaths and
you didn’t have to leave the door open;
you can keep on walking, ‘cuz I’m not running after you—
forget the pieces of my heart that you left on the porch again.
I’m tired of chasing, it’s not my job to clean up your mess.

The sunlight is the only lightbulb that hasn’t burned out in me.
